New Delhi, 11-Oct-2010: On a very diappointing day for the host country India in the Commomwealth Games boxing arena, the Manipuri fighter Mayengbam Suranjoy kept the Indian team’s hope high with a easy win against highly rated Bristish borned Pakistani opponent Haroon Iqbal. Suranjoy punched his way to a 9-3 win by knocking down the Pakistani boxer, in the 52 Kg category. The British borned boxer Haroon Iqbal is brother of famous British pugilist Amir Khan.
The glamour Indian boxer Vijendra Singh was knocked by his British opponent today in the 75kg category.Among those who lost their semifinal bouts were Amandeep Singh who lost to Paddy Barnes (Northern Ireland) in 49 kg, Jai Bhagwan who lost to Tom Stalker (England) in 60 kg, and Dilbag Singh who lost to Pat Gallagher (Northern Ireland) in 69 kg.
The Suranjoy was the first Indian to win a gold medal in the 51-kg class in the Inter-Continental President’s Cup in Azerbaijan in 2009. Then he underlined his prowess further when he came up with a gold at the Asian Boxing Championships in China in June 2009.
