IMPHAL, Nov 25: Dr Nimai Chand Luwang, president Manipur People’s Party has today sent a letter to M Veerappa Moily, Union Minister Law & Justice requesting for establishment of a separate High Court for the state of Manipur.
Apprising the union minister of adequate and credible administration of Justice during the reigns of Rajas in the state of Manipur, the letter has further stated that after the merger of Manipur to the Union of India and during the period when the status of the state was that of a Union Territory, a Judicial Commissioner’s court was established which also acted as the Judicial Commissioner of Tripura, which is equivalent to a high court in a state.
The letter further stated that the said Judicial Commissioner’s court was abolished when Manipur attained statehood in 1972, after which the state came under the jurisdiction of the the Gauhati High Court and that even though there is a provision under the constitution of India that there shall be a High Court for each state, no separate High Court has been established for the state of Manipur till today.
Further stating that the people of the state has been facing various inconveniences and difficulties because of the non establishment of a High Court in the state and that the people of the state has been demanding the establishment of a separate High Court in the state as in other states of the country, the letter urged the central government to grant permission for the establishment of a separate high court in the state.
Stating that the central government has already granted permission for establishment of a separate high court for the state of Tripura which was announced by the union law minister at Tripura on November 13, it has also added that the requirements for a high court is far higher in Manipur than in other states of the North East region and as such Manipur should be given priority in the matter.
