Imphal, Dec 3: Manipur today observed along with the world ‘Word Disability Day’ State-wide under the theme ‘International Day for Persons with Disability’. On the occasion, Jayanta gave away 100 pairs of shoes for free to poor and disabled children.
At the capital city in Imphal, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan State Mission Authority (SSA/SMA) observed the occasion in GM Hall. Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, education minister L Jayanta Kumar stressed the importance of right to education under which students who are deprived of education are entitled legal recourse. He said that education has thus been universalized by the Act making it possible for children, both poor and rich, to equal entitlement to education. To upset the prevailing trend of poverty negating school education, the government has been distributing uniform and bags for free to raise enrolment in schools.
In order to nurture a healthy society, it must first nurture quality students, said the Minister, while requesting both teachers and parents to lend a helping hand to that end.
In yet another observance function, All Manipur Handicapped Persons Welfare Association has distributed 50 disabled persons with pension of Rs 300 each per month at a community hall in Haobam Marak in Imphal. Under the auspices of social welfare department, a relay has also been organized in the heart of Imphal city to mark the occasion.
