IMPHAL, Dec 23: Amidst call from various areas of the society to bring an end to domestic violence and violence against women in the state, a woman, identified as Sapam Ibemcha, 27 of Khongjom Sapam Sabal Leikai was set on fire yesterday at around 5:30 pm by her husband.
She was rushed to the Thoubal district hospital yesterday and has been discharged today morning at around 11:00 am. Though Sapam Ibemcha escaped from much injury her chest has been burnt.
Family members told media persons that the husband identified as Sapam Jiten, 35, an adopted son of Luke Sapam, who as a kid worked as a conductor of a vehicle plying between Dimapur and Imphal on the National highway.
However when Jiten after getting married to Sapam Ibemcha, who is also from the same locality, started indulging in illegal businesses, his adopted father Luke Sapam kicked him out of his home upon which the accused and the victim started living at the victims parental house after building a small house for themselves.
However after sometime the accused eloped with another girl from the same locality after fathering five offspring from Sapam Ibemcha and he remained untraced after that.
The source further added that there were rumours that the accused had left the state along with the second girl. However when family members of Ibemcha heard that he has bought his own oil tankers in the state and have started his own business, they started looking out for him and found him somewhere in Chingmeirong on the morning of December 22.
After a brief scuffle with him, the family members of Ibemcha filed a formal complain at the Kakching Police Station at which the Police confiscated his two oil tankers.
The family member further added that yesterday evening at around 5:00 pm while the victim after attending to her evening prayers was getting inside her house threshold from the courtyard saw her husband Sapam Jiten sitting inside her room, at which she asked him why he was there, however instead of answering to her, he poured Kerosene oil on her body and set her on fire.
Luckily two of her daughters who saw their mother set on fire yelled for help, at which the neighbour came in on hearing their yelling. However Jiten managed to escaped from the scene and is still at large.
