Counting for civic polls at Manipur begins, Congress leading

Imphal, Jan 7: The counting process for the election of local bodies of various Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats in the valley districts of the state started this monrning at the office complex of the concerned DCs of Imphal, West, Imphal East, Imphal East, Bishnupur and Thoubal districts.
The Congress Party is leading in the fray so far according to provisional results received late in the evening today. The counting for the remaining ones will resume from 8 am tomorrow at the concerned DC offices.
It may be mentioned that the election of local bodies is being held with an objective to have total decentralization of powers to the local self government bodies in which 256 councilors and 453 ward development committee members will be elected for the eight municipality areas comprising of 109 wards while 484 councilors and 697 ward development committee members will also be elected for the 18 nagar panchayats encompassing 170 wards.
The election of the said local bodies was held on January 3.
According to preliminary reports, out of the total of 26 areas which include 8 municipalities and 18 nagar panchayats, the counting process of only 6 municipality areas and 6 nagar panchayats was completed . The counting for the rest of the14 areas 2 municipalities and 12 nagar panchayats would resume tommorow from 8 am onwards.
So far,  Congress could muster up 84 councilors for both the municipalities and nagar panchayats thereby leading the pack followed by Independent candidates at 48. Communist Party of India (CPI), Manipur Peoples’ Party (MPP) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are trailing at 6, 4 and nil respectively. Counting for the remaining seats will resume on Saturday, said a source.
