IMPHAL, Jan 14: Rich tributes were paid to the departed drivers of the state on the Drivers’ Day, 2011 organized by All Manipur Drivers’ Welfare Association at its office at MG Avenue, Imphal.
The observation was attended by M. Mani, district transport officer, Imphal West, Ito Tongbram, ex-president of All Manipur United Clubs’ Organization (AMUCO), and Y. Lokeshwor, general secretary of Manipur Truck Owners’ Welfare Association, as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking at the observation function, M. Mani stated that the drivers of the state should be shown deep regard and honour for their courage and willingness to serve the people. They have been rendering commendable service in the society by transporting goods and passengers, however many people tend to overlook their service to the society, he said.
Although road accidents happened in unexpected manners, the drivers should be cautious by avoiding reckless driving as far as possible. It is compulsory for everyone to follow the motor-vehicle act and traffic rules to ensure road safety, he asserted.
The ever increasing number of motor vehicles in Imphal area leads to traffic congestion and has become a factor for more road accidents. The road safety measures can be taken up effectively only when the state is fully developed in its roads and other infrastructures, Mani noted.
Y. Ibeni lauded the drivers for their courage and will to serve the people all throughout the day. They have been transporting essential commodities from outside to feed the people of the state.
The drivers are having a hard risky life just to earn daily breads for their family members. Some of them have even laid down lives due to the conflict situation of the state, she stated.
Ibeni further appealed to the concerned authority to prevent torture against drivers and improve the condition of the two national highways of the state.
The family members of the departed drivers were also presented gifts by the organizers.
