A Manipuri Boy Attacked in Gurgaon,
No Cab Service for Male Night Shift Workers

New Delhi, February 14, 2011:
A 20-year-old boy from Manipur, working as sales assistant at Pantaloons, Sahara Mall in Gurgaon, Haryana was attacked by three unknown persons last night. He suffered fractures on his right hands and injury on the chest. The company says that no cab service is available for male night shift workers.
According to the information reaching North East Support Centre & Helpline said that Pantaloons, where victim James (name changed) works, had special sales, which ended yesterday. James left the office at around 1.30 AM and while he was waiting for public transportation on nearby Sahara Mall to return back home, three unidentified men came in a white Maruti Van and abducted him.
“I was taken to some place opposite to Ambience Mall and mercilessly beaten without being told any reason. My hand was fractured and chest and back badly injured. They detained me the whole night and left me alone at daybreak,” James tells North East Support Centre & Helpline.
James carried cash and ATM card in his wallet, but there was not an attempt to loot him. “I do not have any problem or quarrel with anyone. I do not understand what was their intention for attacking me,” added James.
Addressing the problem faced by North East Indian communities, particularly sexual violence against women, has been addressed and policy and plan of action have been taken by Delhi police and they need to be monitored on regular basis.
Madhu Chandra – Spokesperson of North East Support Centre & Helpline says, “The issue of racial attack and discrimination in Gurgaon is not addressed so far by Gurgaon Police. Many requests have been made to Commissioner Police of Gurgaon and no response received so far.”
Racial attacks on North East people and easy targeting North East women for sexual advances are still grim concerns in Delhi and Gurgaon. “We will appeal to the Gurgaon Police Commissioner to develop police and plan of action to prevent the prevailing racial attack on North East communities,” says Madhu Chandra.
Speaking to the Shop Manager of Pantaloons, he said that no cab service is provided to men working during night shift. “It is a great concern for men working night shift without cabs provided. We will approach Delhi and NCR Police to include this in their 9 points safety guideline for women working in BPO companies,” adds Madhu Chandra.
