IMPHAL, Feb 4: The entire Imphal valley and some hill areas of the state lying at the southern portion were struck by a strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the richter scale and depth 88.8 km this evening at 7:25 pm.
The epicentre of the earthquake was reported to be somewhere in Sagaing Division of Myanmar (located at 24.8 degree North Latitude and 94.6 degree East Longitude) which is about 50 kilometer northwest from the Indo-Myanmar border.
The impact of the earthquake lasted for nearly two minutes which created panic amongst the people in the valley area, especially those who live near or in tall concrete buildings.
Fortunately however, there was no report of major casaulty or damage in the aftermath of the tremor, except for the collapse of some electric posts in Churachandpur district due to which the power supply in some areas of the district has been disrupted.
The quake occurred 88.8 km below the earth’s surface and was also felt in Assam, Meghalaya and parts of Mizoram and Nagaland.
Further reports mentioned that the epicentre at the Indo-Myanmar border region is remote and sparsely populated, more than 250 miles (400 kilometers) from the Myanmar city of Mandalay.
