IMPHAL, Feb 13: Students of government run schools today locked numerous government-run schools in the state as a part of their agitation against the long stand off between the teachers under the conglomerate of COTA and the state government resulting in the closure of classes in all government run schools.

Students of various schools led by All Manipur Govt High and Higher School Students’ Union Coordination Committee locked schools of the Imphal area including Johnstone Higher Secondary school, Tamphasana Girls’ Higher Secondary, Wangkhei Boys’ High School, Wangkhei Girls’ school, CC higher secondary and others of the Khurai lamlong area.

The aggrieved students had stormed the gates of the Raj Bhavan yesterday evening demanding intervention from the government and save the future of the students who have been left hanging in between the agitating teachers and the government. The students had also set a deadline of 1 pm of February 13 for the government to bring an amiable solution to the issue which is threatening the very future of the students.

The students had also warned of burning down the schools incase the government failed to settle the issue and resumed classes in the government run schools by 1pm of this evening.

With the passing of the deadline today, the students as the first part of their agitation had locked the schools which had become useless in the face of the present confrontation.

It may be mentioned that though classes in private schools have been going on as usual, all government run school students have been deprived of regular classes for the past one month. Regular classes in the schools have been regularly stalled for the past one year due to the confrontation between the teachers and the government.

The approaching board exams which will commence probably from March have only worsened the situation for the students, they are afraid that the present confrontation will harm their careers. Though the confrontation is mainly between the teachers and the government, the effect has been felt mostly by the student community.
