GK Pillai negates border land transfer report; inspects recently acquired hovercrafts of state police

IMPHAL, March 5: “Not even an inch of land at the bordering area of Manipur has been transferred to the Myanmar Government” said union home secretary GK. Pillai, while talking to media at the sideline of the 2nd Manipur Tribal Culture Exchange Programme, held at Ukhrul Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) ground, Ukhrul district, organized by the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) and hosted by Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) from March 4 to March 6.

The home secretary was responding to a query from the media persons in connection with reports coming in some few months back on the alleged handing over of some border areas under Chandel district to Myanmar. Further in his response the visiting home secretary clarified that there has not been any changes made with regards to the land demarcation of 1947. And no changes would be brought about. The land belong to the Manipur state and Government of India, he added.

Earlier, while addressing the gathering at the TNL ground as the chief guest the visiting home secretary stated that all the ongoing projects in the state under central government funding including the Mini secretariat, New District Hospital, sports complex etc will soon be inaugurated.

He also assured to address the problems faced by the people of Ukhrul including errant BSNL mobile connectivity, lack of ATMs, banking, roads, power supply etc at the earliest.

Meanwhile, after having attended the programme at Ukhrul, the union home secretary accompanied by the state chief secretary, DS Poonia and the state DGP Y. Joykumar visited the Tubul police outpost, Bishnupur district.

The union home secretary inspected the three hovercrafts which was recently allotted to a unit of the Bishnupur Police Commandos and also conducted a trial run of the crafts at the Loktak Lake, which will be used in counter insurgency operation to flush out militants taking refuge at the Lake.

GK. Pillai, who was on his second visit to Ukhrul, assured the people of the Ukhrul that within a short span of time, weeks, or months Ukhrul is going to have a class standard sports stadium.

In an exclusive interactive press interview before lunch, the home secretary also said that the present Indo-Naga Peace Process is in smooth progress. The VIP was accompanied by the state chief secretary, DS Poonia (IAS) and Ukhrul deputy commissioner (DC) N Ashok Kumar (IAS) who attended the programme as the functional president and guest of honour.

Several Tribal Social Organizations including the ATSUM, United Naga Council (UNC), Kuki Inpi Manipur, KIM, Tangkhul Naga Long, (TKS), public leaders and general public also attended the programme.

Dr. John Pulamte, adviser ATSUM while delivering his keynote speech expressed his strong opposition to the State Government’s policy underlining to diminish or degrade the powers and functioning of the deputy commissioners’ offices in the districts of Manipur and the illegally introduced 200 Points Roster including the state posts vacancies by the Government.

The Tribal Cultural Exchange Program 20011 under the theme, “Enlivening Our Cultural Dynamics” was kicked-off in the midst of thousands of people gathering at the TNL ground with the conglomerated section of various hill tribal communities of Manipur amidst tight security arrangement. The inaugural function was started after an invocation by Rev. Aping Khamrang, pastor, UBC. Welcome speech was delivered by Thomas Taishya, President ATSUM and thereafter Cultural Dance displayed presented from ChuraChandpur, Chandel, Tamenglong, Senapati and Ukhrul tribal Communities Dance troupes. UNC president, Samson Remei and Thangkhosei Haokip, Kuki Inpi Manipur president, also attended the function as special guest.
