IMPHAL, Mar 16: The Kuki/Khulmi Development Council Demand Committee (KDCDC), Manipur has urged the Union Home Minister to fulfill its demands for the creation of Kuki Development Council under the 6th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.A release of the KDCDC said that the chairman of KDCDC Yanglet Haopkip met the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today along with vice-president of BJP and Lok Sabha MP Bijoya Chakarborty.
Yanglet and Bijoya urged the Home Minister to implement the 6th Scheduled in line with Bodoland Territorial Council, North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council of Assam for the amelioration of the Kuki people.In response to the two leaders, Home Minister Chidambaram assured that he would take up the demand of the Kuki (Khulmi) Development Council under 6th Schedule to implementation and fulfill the aspirations of the Kuki People in Manipur.
Chidambaram further said that there are other Kuki organizations at Churachandpur and Sadar Hills with their separate demands and so the government could not take decision to implement 6th schedule for Churachandpur, Chandel and Sadar Hills under one administration unit for the Kukis. However, the government can make necessary arrangement for the creation of Kuki (Khulmi) Development Council under 6th Schedule if the people of Chandel district agree with separate implementation in their district alone for bringing of development peace and harmony among different communities of the state, Home Minister asserted.
