`Pending work at Tribal market not resumed since Sonia Gandhi`s visit`

Local leaders showing media persons around the Tribal Market at Lambulane which is yet to be completed even though construction had begun since 2004. Unhappy with the progress of the construction of the market local organizations had called a joint press conference today.
IMPHAL June 29: Way back in 2004, the then government authorities had started construction of the Tribal Market complex situated in New Lambulane in Imphal East under the ministry of Tribal Development.

A formal symbolic inauguration was also held in 2010 by UPA chairperson and the president of Indian National Congress, Sonia Gandhi, during her maiden visit to the state.

Interestingly, however, the construction of the market complex is yet to be completed even after over seven years, creating apprehension and resentment amongst the local populace over the attitude of the government would boil over.

Demanding the concerned government authority for speedy completion of the construction at the Market complex with immediate execution of the pending works, a joint press conference was convened by the various civil societies of New Lambulane, this morning.

Expressing resentment Thangmang Haokip, secretary New Lambulane welfare committee said that the construction work was started way before construction statrted at the Ima market complexes of Khwairamband bazar however due to undisclosed reason the construction work of theTribal market building has been halted since long.

On the other hand the situation has adversely affected the local vendors engaged in selling vegetable and other commodities currently on both sides of the New Nambulane main road, who are eagerly awaiting for allotment of their respective plots or sheds, he lamented.

He further alleged that the progress of work was much hectic during the eve of Sonia Gandhi’s visit to the state however the work was halted soon after its inauguration showing no sign of progress till date.

Further, he lamented that over and above the situation is going from bad to worst as no authorized person has been appointed to look after the market complex. He said that due to the negligence of the government, miscreants had spoiled a portion of the building and further expressed his apprehension of the market complex turning into a save haven for anti social activities.

Thangmang agitated with the concerned authority said that all their effort to save guard the sanctity of the market complex from such anti social acts were left futile with no cooperation from the government authority. The installation of a water reservoir without proper covering inside the complex is also of major concern as it may cause fatality to children and even to adults, he added. He further added that Rs 5 crores had already been used on the construction of the market complex so far.

Condemning the concerned authority for their nonperformance regarding the construction of the market complex the representatives of All Tribal Women Market association said that their main objective is to render service for the welfare of the women especially tribal women and for the development of indigenous tribes and demanded the government to act accordingly for the completion of pending construction of market complex.

The press conference was jointly called by New Nambulane Welfare Committee, Tribal Youth Club, Nishaband Ima Iben New Nambulane and All Tribal Women Market association, New Nambulane and was held at the committee office of NLWC.
