IMPHAL, July 7: Befitting state honour has been given to the six accident victims of the Manipur Rifles and India Reserve Battalion who were killed in an unfortunate accident yesterday along the NH-53 near K. Sinam village under Sapermeina Police station, amidst tearful mourning at the 1st Manipur Battalion complex.

The lifeless bodies of the victims were brought to the 1st MR complex after an official funeral procession from the RIMS mortuary this afternoon.

Top ranking police officials headed by the state director general of police (DGP), family members of the victims and well wishers paid floral tribute during the ceremony.

Gun salutes, guard of honour and observation of two minutes silence in honour of the departed soul marked the honouring ceremony.

In the meantime, the identities of the two jawans who remained unknown till yesterday have been established as one Naorem Surchandra, 30, of Kiyam Siphai and KC. Daimond, 30, s/o (L) Chagipong of Tamenglong both were jawans of 5th MR.

The lifeless body was later taken by their respective families to perform their last rites.

A mini bus of a ROP team comprising jawans of IRB and MR from different battalion was crushed by a huge boulder near K. Sinam village under Sapermeina police station about 38 km from Imphal killing six jawans instantly and injuring several others on board.

On the other hand, the transporter and drivers’ council (TDC) has extended monetary assistance of Rs 5000 each to two seriously injured jawans currently undergoing treatment at RIMS and Shija hospital today.

Moreover the TDC has also announced to provide financial assistance of Rs 10,000 each to the bereaved families of the deceased victims of the accident through the DGP Manipur.

While talking to media persons at the RIMS the chairman of the TDC, H. Ranjit, drew the attention of the authority concerned to develop the NH-53 which was recently converted to NH-37 taking in to account the frequents accidents and inconveniences being faced by the transporters and commuters to prevent unwanted incidents in the future.
