IMPHAL September 28: Demanding a full fledged district status for Jiribam, the 60 hours general strike called by the Jiribam District demand committee at present still continues without reports of any untoward incidents.
The strike began from 6 pm of September 26 and will be affective till 6 pm of September 29. As a fallout of the imposed general strike, normal life of Jiribam was very much affected as vehicular traffic came to a standstill, shops remained closed, banks, petrol pumps and other offices and public services came to a grinding halt.
Strike supporters including meira paibis took to the streets to enforce the general strike. Jiribam police also took up measures to thwart any untoward incidents from happening and managed to stop strike supporters from burning an effigy at Jiribam market.
Transport vehicles carrying passengers from Jiribam to Imphal and others carrying edible goods were blocked.
