Separate Phungyar district champion MLA Wungnaoshang Keishing dies at 54

IMPHAL, October 8: Phungyar MLA, Wungnaoshang Keishing passed away early this morning at around 6:45am at his official quarter, Babupara, Imphal at the age of 54 following cardiac arrest.

The late MLA is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.

Family sources said that the late MLA as usual woke up normally this morning and continued with his daily morning activities when suddenly he began to cough continuously and began bleeding from his mouth.

The late MLA’s personnel doctor, Dr. Dwijamani of JNIMS was also called in however seconds before the doctor’s arrival the MLA suddenly stopped breathing informed the family.

He was declared dead at around 6:45 am.

Dr. Dwijamani informed that the MLA was suffering from several illnesses which included liver and heart problems and blood pressure.

Howver the MLA acted normal and even contacted him last night regarding his health, added Dr. Dwijamani.

On receiving the report the state Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly I Hemochandra, MP outer, cabinet ministers, MLAs, members of the MSCP etc visited the MLA’s quarter.

While mourning on the sudden and untimely demise of the MLA, Chief Minister O. Ibobi termed him as a true leader who cares for the grievances and hardship of the people and who has been relentlessly working for the upliftment of his people.

The demand for a separate district of Phungyar assembly constituency is proof of how much the late MLA cares of what has been inflicted to the people due to lack of development in the area, noted the Chief Minister.

He termed the demand put up by the MLA as genuine adding the government is seriously considering the issue and is waiting for the Committee on Re-Organisation of the Administrative and Police District Boundary report.

Outer MP Thangso Baite, claimed that the untimely demise of the MLA Wungnaoshan Keishing is not only a loss for Phungyar Assembly Constituency but for the entire Manipur.

His devotion for his people is apparent from his demand for a separate district of Phungyar, said the MP.

A condolence service for the late MLA will be held tomorrow at Babupara organized by the Phungyar people tomorrow at 9:30 pm besides a condolence service at the Manipur Legislative Assembly at 11 am after which his dead body will be taken to his native village Kongkan, Ukhrul.

Wungnaoshang is the fourth child among seven siblings of (L) Tonghei Keishing (father) and Kachungla Keishing (Mother) of Chongdan village, Kasom Khullen block now permanently settled at Kongkan village.

He was first elected to the 8th Manipur Legislative Assembly with a MSCP ticket and later merged to the INC. After that he took charge as minister of state (independent charge), fisheries and Government Press from 2002-2003 and then minister of state (independent charge) excise and jail administration, 2003-2004 and chariman, Committee on Public Grievances/Peitions, 2006.

He was elected for the second time as Phungyar MLA to the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly as Independent candidate.

He was also general secretary, Manipur State Congress Party 1998-2002, vice president, Manipur Pradesh Congress Youth Committee from 1995-1998, vice chairman, Eastern Border Area Development Authority (EBADA). Besides that, he also held key posts in several organizations in district level and block level of Ukhrul formed for the upliftment of his constituency.
