2 jawans killed, another injured as UNLF ambushes CRPF on poll duty

UKHRUL, Jan.27: At least two CRPF jawans on poll duty were killed and another injured in an ambush laid by UNLF militants near Kongkan village in Ukhrul district at around 12:30pm Thursday. The CRPF personnel numbering 30 were headed for Kongkan 43/43 polling station along with three polling officers were on their way from Kamjong Sub-Division head-quarter when the attack took place close to their destination. The team included a peon and two Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel.

Meanwhile, the UNLF has claimed responsibility for the fatal attack. A press statement released by its senior publicity officer KshYoiheiba maintained two CRPF personnel died and another three were injured. The militants also reportedly took away two weapons from the paramilitary.

According to Chasad Police, the 30 CRPF personnel were moving on foot with two Shaktiman trucks carrying the polling officers and electioneering materials for Kongkan polling stations, which had been merged with Aishi polling station.

The deceased according to the source were identified as GD. Narender Singh, GD. Paras Mani Jha and the injured as GD. Subir Das, from B` Coy 175 CRPF. Soon after the incident the police and troops of 12 Assam Riffles rushed to the spot. However, the militants after exchanging fire with the CRPF jawans that lasted for about 10 minutes made good their escape in the dense jungle, the source said. Police said, the AR has been detailed for security along the Indo-Myanmar border which is a sensitive zone. Sources said, the incident occurred due to the lapses in security planning.

In the meantime, the Union Home Ministry has instructed the AR to provide security cover during the elections in the insurgent infested areas, the source added.
