IMPHAL, Jan 24: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Manipur Unit has decried the conduct of the election observers and other officials for failing to check gross violation of model code of conduct by the ruling Congress candidates.

Speaking to media persons this evening at NCP Manipur Unit head-office at Thangmeiband, Keishamthong NCP candidate Laisom Ibomcha rued that the election observers and officials of Manipur Police have failed to look into the complaints raised by the NCP towards violation of model code of conduct by the Congress and other parties contesting in the 10th state legislative election.

He stated that he had lodged a complaint to Manipur DGP against two officers of Manipur Police Commando, namely sub-inspector Potsangbam Tarun and sub-inspector Potsangbam Maniratan and their elder brother Potsangbam Nilakanta of Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai on January 14 for threatening the supporters of NCP Keishamthong assembly constituency during election campaigns.

In his complaint letter to the DGP, Ibomcha mentioned that the three brothers are cousins of state health minister L Jayentakumar who is contesting the election from Keishamthong assembly constituency in Congress ticket.

The two police officers have been threatening the NCP workers and joining the election campaigns of L Jayentakumar for quite a long time. However, none of the election observer and police official takes serious note of the conduct of these two officers despite of several complaints, he asserted.

Ibomcha further mentioned that the matter would be raised to the Election Commission of India soon to ensure free and fair polls on January 28.

Roshan Maisnam, secretary of NCP Manipur Unit, stated that the Congress and other political parties are openly violating the model code of conduct by putting up banners, flags and posters on public properties. Moreover, luncheons, dinners, tea parties etc. are being organized by the workers of Congress and other political parties as against the directives of Election Commission of India.

He appealed to the officials concerned to take necessary action against the violation of model code of conduct and ensure free and fair polls.
