MPCC president appeals CorCom to lift ban on Congress

IMPHAL, Jan 7: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaikhangam had formally announced the candidates selected for all the 60 constituencies in the state by the Central Election Committee for the ensuing election to the Legislative Assembly of Manipur, yesterday at Congress Bhawan.

The IFP had already carried the list of 60 candidates in our January 6 edition.

Meanwhile, speaking to media persons during a press briefing announcing the candidates, the MPCC president stated that the candidates were selected by the CEC of the AICC after a deliberate screening in the presence of AICC president Sonia Gandhi, Dr Manmohan Singh, other central leaders of the party and Chief Minister O Ibobi and himself at New Delhi.

He further informed that list has been announced after the meeting with the central leaders had unanimously approved the list of the candidates.

Further briefing the media persons, the MPCC president mentioned that the party had received numerous applications for Congress tickets from candidates of other political parties.

Meanwhile, on being asked about the ban imposed on the party by the militant outfit, CorCom, the president replied that the Congress can only appeal to the outfit to lift the ban. He added that the ban on the party can only lead to chaos in the society and kill democracy.
