IMPHAL, January 11: There has been no respite in violent activities in the state in the run-up to the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly Election with separate incidents of firing at the private residence of a Congress candidate and the planting of a hand grenade at the residence of a Congress nominee being reported today.
Unidentified persons suspected to be CorCom cadres fired some seven-eight rounds from a firearm at the residence of one Waikhom Shyama w/o W Mangi of Narankonjil Mamang Leikai this wee hour at around 1:30am.
Shyama is identified to be a Congress candidate for the upcoming general election in Langthabal a/c. The bullets hit the outer wall of Shyama’s residence.
Police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, miscreants hurled a Chinese hand grenade at the residence of Lairenjam Kumar of Haobam Marak Irom Leikai this early morning at around 6:30am.
Lairenjam Kumar is a nominee of RK Anand who will contest the ensuing election with a Congress ticket.
The bomb however failed to explode. Concern police later on retrieved the unexploded bomb.
In yet another attack on the Congress workers, a grenade attack was carried out at the residence of one Tongbram Yaima tonight at about 7.45 pm, however there were no casualties.
The grenade landed at the front porch of the residence and is believed to be thrown by suspected CorCom activists who have imposed a ban on the workings of the Congress party in the state, according to police sources. The younger brother of T Yaima, identified as Rohini alias Afa is said to be a staunch worker of Sagolband MLA Kh Loken Singh.
In another similar incident, a handgrenade was found at the main entrance of former INC councillor Meisnam Joy, 60, at Keisampat Top Leirak near Ram Lal Paul School at about 8.40 pm tonight. Joy is also a hard worker for Keisamthong MLA L Jayantakumar Singh. Police bomb squad has recovered the grenade.
In yet another incident, unidentified persons lobbed another hand grenade at the Nambol Awang Leikai residence of RK Biren, EE DRDA, Churachandpur district this morning at around 7:30am.
Family members informed that they had no idea about the motive behind the grenade attack.
Nambol police later on retrieved the grenade and filed a case in connection with the incident.
