Seven Bangladesh nationals detained

IMPHAL, Jan 24: Seven Bangladesh nationals without valid documents were detained and later handed over to police by volunteers of Federation of Regional Indigenous Society (FREINDS) with the help of personnel of India Reserve Battalion (IRB) at Wahengbam Leikai Jiri bus parking here yesterday.

FRIENDS with the assistance provided by IRB personnel last night around 10.45, FRIENDS general secretary Joy told the media at its office today.

Three persons who possessed incomplete identification documents, purportedly issued by an Assamese Zilla Parishad member, were arrested immediately after they alighted from a Tata Winger passenger van with registration No. 5385, belonging to a Manipuri.

The three foreigners were later handed over to the city police, Joy informed and said that they had been handed over to the police as they had no possess adequate identification documents. He also appealed to the public to contact FREINDS if they locate the presence of illegal foreigners.

According to 2001 census, the total population of foreigners living in the State was recorded as 74488 and this clearly shows an influx of foreigners in Manipur from neighboring Myanmar and Bangladesh, Joy added.
