MOREH, Feb 18: Community leaders of Moreh has called upon the state government to appoint a permanent district transport officer  in the town to prevent any untoward incident due to heavy congestion in the Evening Bazar arising from unsafe parking by vehicles on both side of the highway passing through it.

With the objective of discussing the ongoing traffic problems and absence of traffic personnel and traffic senses among the local public, the Hill Tribal Council, Moreh organized a meeting of community leaders at its office this morning.

The Meetei Council Moreh(MCM), All Community

Development Organization, Moreh (ACODOM), Manipuri Muslim Council, Moreh

(MMCM), Gorkha Samaj samiti and Tamil Sangam Moreh were represented at the meeting.

The appointment of a DTO in the border town found a consensus. It agreed that the absence of traffic personnel in the town has created a situation of full disregard to traffic rules and full-time appointment of a DTO will bring senses to the commuters. Also, the enforcement of traffic rules could check the discomfort to the commutters arising from righ-hand side driven vehicles crossing in from Myanmar.

The meeting passed a resolution asking vehicle owners to park their vehicles at

the two existing parking places in the town-Moreh town parking in Ward No. 6 and Moreh bus parking at Ward no. 8.

Continuation of piling of vehicles, mainly auto-rickshaws and vans, on both sides of NH-39 around the Evening Bazar which had proven to be a risky proposition for the pedestrians, especially the school students, was discussed in detail. The meeting mooted the idea of requesting the Moreh police to depute the VDF personnel under its command to assist in traffic regulation and disperse those vehicles parking improperly.

The gathering agreed to convene another round of talk for further discussion on the issue with the participation of top police and district administration.
