IMPHAL, Feb 24 (Newmai News Network): Poppy plants cultivated in an around 300 acres of land were on Friday completely destroyed by a combined team of Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB), Narcotic Affairs Boarder (NAB) with assistance from the personnel of 7 IRB and Imphal east district police on Nongmaiching (Baruni) hill in Manipur.
The large-scale destruction of poppy plants grown in the areas of Khallong, Heikot and Terakhong in Nongmaiching hill was carried out after NAB and NCB received information on cultivation of the plant in an area covering about 300 acres, NAB official Amila Sharma informed.
He said, “Poppy plants cultivated in around 1100 acres of land in different parts of Manipur have been cut and damaged in a drive being jointly taken up by NCB and NAB since January 1 this year. The official also said this drive will continue till we wipe it out utterly.
NCB officials had revealed late last year that small mobile heroin-manufacturing units were mushrooming in every corner of the state, posing a serious threat to the global fight against drug menace.
Poppy plants are used to manufacture narcotic drugs like heroin, morphine, opium etc. which are highly addictive.
