NEW DELHI, Feb 22: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to introduce Rs 1,000 denomination banknotes with inset letter “R” in both numbering panels in Mahatma Gandhi Series 2005.

The design of the notes, which will bear RBI Governor D Subbarao`s signature, will be similar in all respects to the banknotes of Rs 1,000 in Mahatma Gandhi Series 2005 issued earlier except for the rupee symbol, the central bank said in a statement.

However, the notes in the denomination of Rs 1,000 issued by the RBI in the past will continue to be legal tender, it added.

Banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series 2005 were introduced in 1996.
