Senapati rape accused held

IMPHAL, Feb 17: The accused in the outrageous rape and attempted-murder of a minor girl in Takamei village of Senapati district was arrested today by a combined police team near Muirei bus stand along Imphal-Ukhrul road this afternoon.

The perpetrator of the horrendous crime, Ngangom Shanti Kumar, 26, son of Rajen of Sekta Mayai Leikai, who was declared a wanted person by the police, was arrested by a combined team of Senapati and Imphal East districts police. According to reports, Shanti was living at Takamei with the family of his in-laws and has been absconding since the commission of the rape on the 14-year-old girl on February 9.

He was produced before the chief judicial magistrate, Senapati later today and remanded to police custody for further investigation of the case.

According to police sources, incessant raids were conducted at his residence in Sekta and those of his relatives and other suspected places, until they finally reap success today afternoon.

The unfortunate victim, Durga Devi suffered severe damages to her eyes and has been taken to Guwahati for treatment. A JAC had been formed in connection with the incident and a memorandum was submitted to the chief minister Okram Ibobi through the district collector of Senapati yesterday.
