UKHRUL, March 13: The International Women’s Day (IWD) was observed in Ukhrul organized by United NGOs Mission, Manipur (UNM-M) in collaboration with Ukhrul Action of Women In Development (AWID) at Hotel Oasis Conference Hall, TTA complex Hamleikhong under the theme, “connecting girls, inspiring futures and empower rural women-end hunger and poverty” on March 8.
The observation was also attended by scores of women’s organization, local bodies of the district.
The observation evoked a tremendous response for women’s issues which are prevalent in the society today like violence against women and further invited women to participate at various levels of administration through the various avenues provided by the state for the comfort of its women citizens.
H Thotchuila, executive secretary of the Participatory Action for Sustainable Development Organization (PASDO) in her key-note address expressed her appreciation towards the women participants and highlighted the brief background story of the observation.
Dr Sina K Lamlang, lecturer of the Pettigrew College who attended as the guest of honour exhorted the need for improvement of women’s status and attempts to introduce programmes for the gender so as to enable them to play an effective role in the society.
AS Wonthing Zimik, DI, UADC, Ukhrul, who was the chief guest commented on women’s role and status as compared to that of their male counterparts in the society.
