IMPHAL, Apr 18: A rifleman of the 12 Assam Rifles of the NAMPISA helipad post under Chassad police station in Ukhrul was killed during duty when his service rifle accidentally fired hitting him on the chest. The incident happened on Tuesday at around 11:15pm.
The rifleman identified as Haripada Devnath, 46 son of Rabindra Kumar Debnath of Maheshpur, West Tripura was on duty at the Helipad in connection with the arrival of the Assam Rifles DG.
A source has further informed that the dead body of the rifleman has been taken over to his family at West Tripura after a post mortem was conducted at the RIMS.
