The observance at the historic Chinga Mathak, the memorial complex of students who died in various protests launched by AMSU, was thronged by people from different parts of the state, including students where they paid rich tributes to the late students.
The occasion was followed by a public meeting at Hao Ground during which many leaders spoke on different topics.
Former AMSU president, L Dilip, Th Suresh, president AMSU and Dr N Mohilal, Assistant Professor of Department of Life Science, Manipur University, and former AMSU president, LC Somerendro attended the event as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, L Dilip said Inner Line Permit in Manipur is a must and that a clear understanding in this regard is quite necessary to facilitate re-introduction of the permit system.
Later, the AMSU submitted a memorandum to the state Chief Minister on various demands which include immediate implementation of the agreement made between the representatives of Manipur government and representatives of the student body at the former’s office on July 22 and August 5 of 1980 and the agreement signed between representatives of Manipur government and AMSU president in presence of Governor of Manipur on November 9, 1994.
An appropriate policy of recruitment both in public and private sectors should be taken up to curb the unwanted influx of the immigrants from other States of India and outside the territory of Indian union and re-introduce the Inner-Line Permit System so as to regulate the entry of migrant labourers in the interest of local indigenous population.
Special Status for the people of Manipur should be maitained without disturbing the territorial integrity of Manipur in order to fulfill the political and economic aspirations of the people of Manipur and Manipuris living abroad.
The memorandum also drew the attention of the Chief Minister on the emerging uncertainty of the socio-political and economic situation in the state in the recent years.
