Earth Day slogan `No to plastic`

IMPHAL, April 22: As observed around the world, the Earth Day 2012 was also observed in various parts of the state with the Directorate of Environment, Manipur organizing a state function at the Kangla along with a mass rally and a tree plantation program inside the historic Kangla.

The day was observed under the theme “Mobilize the Earth” and was jointly organized with Women’s Environmental Protection Force, Manipur.

The rally was participated mainly by womenfolk.

The main function inside the Kangla was attended by Principal Secretary, Forests and Environment and Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Government of Manipur VK Thakral IAS, and Secretary to Governor, Manipur and Commissioner, Art and Culture, Government of Manipur Dr RK Nimai IAS as the chief guest and president respectively.

In his speech during the function, VK Thakral said that the problem which planet earth is facing is something which everyone should be concerned with, as only one individual cannot win this war.

Not only the government but NGOs, private sectors as well as individuals are also needed in this fight. A collective fight is the only way to win this war to save our environment. Excessive consumption and industrialization causes the problem so we need to keep this in mind to protect the future of our generation, he added.

He also appreciated the effort of the Women’s Environmental Protection Force in helping to organize the function as well as the contribution they have made to protect the environment.

RK Nimai addressing the function said that the objective of this program is to create awareness among the people. We all know that the temperature is increasing and it is not only because of the destruction of greeneries but also because of the consumption of the wet lands.

Further concentrating on the students present at the function, he said that they should be critical, should ask critical questions on the subjects to fully understand the issue.

The tree plantation program was led by the chief guest and president. Plant saplings were also distributed during the programme.

Meanwhile, in Moreh the observation of the day was organised by 9 AR under HQ 26 sector under the aegis of IGAR (S).

Our Moreh Correspondent adds: 9th AR organized a rally in observation of the International Earth Day at Moreh.

The rally started at 8am from the Eastern Shine School Playground and after passing through forest gate, Ima market, customs office, police station culminated at the Galngam Lenthol football ground.

Students participating in the rally, hold various placards reading ‘conserve water’, ‘say no to plastic’, ‘clean Moreh’, ‘plant trees’.
