IMPHAL, April 19: Imphal East Deputy Commissioner and SDO today faced stiff opposition from residents living at Lei Ingkhol in Chingmeirong when they visited the site where the state government has been planning to construct quarters for employees of the new Secretariat complex.

At about 12:30 pm this afternoon, a team of officials headed by Imphal East DC visited Lei Ingkhol for measurement of land for construction of government quarters to accommodate employees of the Secretariat when hundreds of residents came out and strongly opposed the work, resulting in a scuffle.

However, Wangkhei constituency MLA Y Erabot came to the site and intervened and pacified the crowd.

The MLA told the residents to go to the higher court and fight the case as the government has already planned to construct quarters at the Lei Ingkhol area.

The total population in Lei Ingkhol is about 1000, of which 700 are registered voters. The residents in the area have been strongly opposing the government plan to evict them and build the quarters since 2005 when the beginning of construction of the High Court Complex.

However, the government had served quit notices to the residents for the purpose.

The government can evict or serve quit notice to any residents for its plans and projects anywhere it considers fit under Land Development Act, 1987.
