IMPHAL, April 7: Power consumers of Paona Bazar and Thangal Bazar received optimal power supply as the prepaid power supply were introduced in the Imphal city core area, while consumers bought one lakh worth power units on Thursday, according to sources in the state Power department.
The prepaid system was first introduced in the Imphal Khwairamband area in the first phase by the Power department. In fact, Manipur is the first state in the entire North east to introduce such a system.
Sources in the state Power department said, around 100 consumers bought Rs 1000 recharge cards on Thursday.
According to officials of the department, the prepaid system ensures 16-18 hours of power supply to power consumers.
Meanwhile, uninterrupted power supply otherwise known as VIP lines would be snapped in areas where the prepaid system has been introduced.
In the second phase, pre-paid system would be introduced in Ragailong and Palace compound including the All India Radio complex.
It may be recalled here that, the state Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh had assured the general public that power would be one of his main priorities and that he would try his utmost to ensure 20 hours of power supply daily to the consumers.
Meanwhile, officials in the Power department are still in the dark on how the department would be able to supply 20 hours of power daily as funds are tight and when the capability of the department to receive power from external sources is still being questioned.
