IMPHAL, April 23: Consultations are underway with the Union Tourism Ministry for development of the sacred site of Khongjom as a major eco-tourism spot under a Rs 20 crore mega project.
This was stated by state Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh while speaking at a function held in commemoration of the martyrs who laid down their lives to protect the independence of Manipur during the Khongjom Battle on April 23, 1891.
State Governor Gurbachan Jagat and CM Okram Ibobi Singh led the people in paying rich tributes at the Khongjom War Memorial located at Kheba Ching.
A contingent of 2nd Manipur Rifles gave the guard of honour and gun salute to the heroes of Khongjom Battle, followed by a two-minute silence in honour of the departed souls of the great fighters.
The Governor and Chief Minister also paid floral tributes at the statue of Paona Brajabashi. Later, a ‘Tarpan’ was offered in the sacred Khongjom River.
The function was attended among others by Inner Manipur MP Dr Meinya Singh, Speaker Th Lokeshwor Singh, MLAs, state Chief Secretary DS Poonia, DGP Ratnakar Baral, top civil and police officials, besides several members of the public.
Notable absentees are Home Minister Gaikhangam, Revenue Minister Th Debendra, Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing and several MLAs.
Addressing a function which was held at the Khongjom War Memorial Hall, Governor Gurbachan Jagat said, ‘We have learnt from history that disunity and differences not only weaken a nation but also are the root cause for the foreign intervention.’
He said that Manipur has been passing through a difficult phase and that the long turmoil has impacted the lives of its citizens, while noting that problems of insurgency and its ramifications such as abduction for ransom, extortion and killing continue while calling of frequent bandhs and blockades are taken for granted by many organizations.
The Governor also expressed serious concern over the increasing crime against women in the state which is famous for its Ima Keithel, Nupilal and Meira Paibis, while adding that these dark forces have been not only hampering the pace of development and progress both in social and economic spheres of the state but also consuming the public money and energy of the government.
“We should defend our freedom with all our strength and for this, it is quite necessary to strengthen the unity and integrity of India,” the Chief Minister insisted.
He also said the need of the hour is to live together in peace and work hard, and maintain discipline, while adding that we should always pay respect to our forefathers.
Welcoming the gathering local MLA P Brojen urged the state government to upgrade Khongjom as a more significant place.
A short play on Khongjom Battle was also staged by artistes of DDU, DIPR and Art and Culture, government of Manipur at the Khongjom War Memorial Hall.
