LAMKA, May 10: A General strike coupled with an economic blockade is set to begin from May 12 till May 19 by the Kuki State Demand Committee to press for a Kuki state.
The general strike will start at 6 am of May 12 till 6 pm of May 15 , 2012 in all the Kuki inhabited areas of the state to be followed by an Economic Blockade of all the National Highways from 6 pm of May 15 to 6 pm of 19 May which will include the banning of government activities and offices .
Briefing the media at Bijang Vengnuom the KSDC spokesperson K .Khongsai said, a Kuki State is long overdue while adding that it is within the constitutional framework.
He said, before the British came they were free and independent and they had to fight the British to protect their land for three years and the Kukis also fought with the INA for which nothing was given in return.
The Kukis had resolved to demand for a separate Kuki state way back in March 2, 1960 during a general meeting of the Kuki National Assembly.
Meanwhile the Churachandpur District Students Union, CDSU, held a sit-in-protest at the district medical hospital campus from about 10 am under the aegis of Joint Philanthropic Organisation and the KSO demanding that the real culprits of CT Scan equipment be punished as per law.
