HIV positive policeman tortures infected wife

IMPHAL, May 22: An HIV positive policeman has been arrested for forcible elopement and marriage of a teenager by hiding his HIV status and alleged torture.

The estranged wife named Karam Thaja, 20, daughter of K Koireng, a resident of Yurembam Awang Leikai, revealed this while speaking to the media at the office of Manipur Network of Positive People (MNP+), Yaiskul Hiruhanba Leikai in Imphal West today.

The policeman has been identified as one Paonam Kishan Mangang, aged 34, son of P Achou of Sagolband Khamnam Bazaar Soyam Leirak in Imphal West.

Narrating her story before the press K Thaja said, her chastity was outraged by Kishan after drugging her at a tea stall at Patsoi Part-IV on August 16 2009. When she came back to her consciousness the following day she was informed that they had eloped.

They were married on January 25, the same year after a second elopement. When she conceived, a miscarriage was forced by Kishan’s sister. She was hospitalized several times without any knowledge of her ailment.

One day she came to know of her husband’s HIV status after she found some documents inside Kishan’s diary. When Kishan found out she was beaten up and locked up in a room for 3 days without food. However, she managed to escape and fled to her parental home.

Later, On February 28, 2010, Thaja confirmed that she was also infected with HIV according to a blood test result from Adarsh Laboratory at Kanglapat here.

She filed a suit against her estranged husband and in-laws in the court of Chief judicial Magistrate, Imphal West which ultimately registered a criminal case Kishan and his family. Kishan and his parents were arrested by police and produced before the court which granted bail to them on Tuesday.

However, the next hearing of the case has been scheduled on June 2.
