IMPHAL, May 9: In a bizarre incident yesterday, a man stabbed his estranged wife in broad daylight near a Jeep parking at Bishnupur Bazar at around 5:30pm. The woman later succumbed to her injuries on the way to RIMS.
Soon after stabbing his wife, the man identified as Khwairakpam Sanamatum, 37 of Ngaikhong Khulen Awang Leikai ran towards some police personnel on routine duty in the nearby area and surrendered himself.
The woman, identified as Meisnam ningol Khwairakpam ongbi Basanti, 30 had separated from her husband some five years ago and was living at her parental home at the same locality as her husband’s house.
She was also staying with both their 12 year old son and nine year old daughter.
Sanamatum is a driver of the Deputy Commissioner, Bishnupur. Basanti had been supporting herself by lending money to shops and vendors of the Bishnupur Bazar area.
The incident happened yesterday evening while she was boarding a Jeep to return to her home after collecting her daily interest amount from the vendors and shop owners.
Her estranged husband came out of nowhere and stabbed her twice, on her right chest and right lower abdomen.
She was taken to the nearby Community Health Centre, Bishnupur for immediate first aid, however due to her deteriorating condition, she was rushed to RIMS. The doctors at RIMS pronounced her brought dead.
Meanwhile, family members of the victim who have collected at the RIMS mortuary after hearing of the incident told media persons, that the locals of the area have already formed a JAC on the issue.
They have further demanded that, the son and daughter should be the sole inheritor of Sanamatum’s land properties, salaries, GP fund and every other property. They also demanded that the said husband and his family members should be banished from the locality immediately.
The family members have also declared not to take over the dead body until the JAC’s and their demands are met with.
