IMPHAL, May 24: The 48 hour bandh imposed by Schedule Caste student bodies in protest against the non-payment of post-matric scholarship failed to cause any major disruptions to normal life in the state.
Except for disruptions in the inter-state and inter-district bus service, there were no major hiccups in the day to day activity in the state.
All major markets of all districts remained opened and there has been no report of any untoward incident till the filling of this report.
Police escorted some goods laden vehilces coming from Moreh to Imphal along the Kakching stretch of the highway. The vehicles reached Imphal in the evening without any untoward incident.
Passengers coming to Imphal from Ukhrul had to take taxi service from Ukhrul to Yaingangpokpi and from there they had to take the diesel auto service to reach Imphal as inter district buses remained off the roads during the first day of the 48 hour bandh.
It may be mentioned that Schedule Caste students had imposed a 48 hour bandh in the state starting from May 23 midnight in protest against the non-payment of post-matric scholarship 2010 – 2011.
The 48 hour bandh was called by representatives of Lois and members of the post matric scholarship affected guardian committee.
The committee had also warned of several other agitations in case the government fails to pay the scholarships.
