Meira Paibi Day observed

IMPHAL, May 28: The 14th Meira Paibi Day was observed today at the Khurai Sanjenthong Tharo Lampak here organized by Meira Paibi Numit Observation Committee.

The function was attended by a host of Meira Paibi leaders including that of Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, Meira Paibi Welfare Association Kangleipak, Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL), Kangleipak Lamjing Apunba Meira Lup (Kanglamei), Women Association for Civic Action Kangleipak (WASAK) and Ching-tam United Women’s Association Kangleipak besides Meira Paibi leaders from far-flung areas.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Kshetri Bimola underscored the need of unity in the society and elaborated on the present problems being faced by Manipuri women, seeking oneness to stand together in safeguarding the society.

She also spoke on the controversial AFSPA, which provides security forces the right to kill people at the slightest suspicion of being underground element.

President of Jiribam Meira Paibi Lup S Sushila stated that the multi-faceted problems of the state could only be solved easily if we are united.

President of the event, Longjam Memchoubi was of the opinion that the culture of the state is deteriorating in an alarming state because the people are now mostly influenced by outside cultures.

She also made allegations that women in the state are suffering from inhuman acts particularly committed by security forces and emphasized on protection of women from atrocities meted out to them by the armed personnel.

Meira Paibi Day is observed every year on May 28 in commemoration of the brave women who had sacrificed their lives in the meira paibi movements in the state.
