PIB denies custodial death

IMPHAL, May 29: A PIB statement has refuted the news report carried out by the IPF in its May 29 edition under the headline ‘Man dies in AR custody at Jiribam’.

It has clarified that Laishram Ibochou Singh arrived at 10:30am at one of the post of AR at jiribam.

It has continued that he was complaining of severe stomach ache and seeking medical attention and was immediately moved in a AR vehicle to the AR hospital at Kadamtala for medical attention.

He was immediately transferred in the unit ambulance to the Jiribam CHC to save his life.

Doctors at the CHC examined the individual and took over the same after preparation of case sheet, it stated.

The statement has also clarified that the individual was neither in the custody of the AR nor handed over to the Jiribam PS.

Meanwhile, the emergency case sheet of the CHC attached with the PIB rebuttal has registered the case as ‘A case of brought dead by AR 22 at around 12pm’.

Meanwhile the dead body has been identified as that of one Leitanthem Ibochou, 42 son of Mani of Mayang Imphal Anilongbi Pukhri Achouba.

Mention may be made that 22nd AR had deposited the dead body along with a driving licence, money bag and a mobile handset at the Jiribam CHC yesterday.

The particulars of the driving licence had indicated that the man could be one Laishram Ibochou, son of (L) L Ibomcha Singh of Keishampat Leimajam Leikai, PS Imphal West.

Meanwhile, the dead body was early this morning shifted to Imphal for post mortem around 8 am.

According to a source, Ibochou was picked up by motor-cycle borne AR personnel in civvies from Lamkhai bazar in front of a shop on May 27 evening. He was blindfolded before being whisked away, the source added.

Later on Assam Rilfes personnel also picked up Ibochou’s alleged second wife from Jairaj hotel. She was later dropped off at the same hotel around 11pm of the same day.

Ibochou’s wife is identified as one Indu of Singjamei Thongam Leikai.
