GUWAHATI, June 8 (Agencies): In a joint operation, five cadres of the Manipur-based United National Liberation Front (UNLF) were nabbed from Guwahati last night.
Four of the militants were arrested from Jorabat area at the outskirts of Guwahati. The militants were travelling in a car from Aizawl in Mizroram to Guwahati when the police and CRPF personnel intercepted them.
Based on their interogation, another UNLF cadre was picked up from Paltan Bazar area in the city this morning.
The arrested militants were identified as Warren alias Hitler, Waikhom Robinson, Shamjetsabam Laiteng, Lallawmpuia Champai and Moirangtham Joy alias Robin, the police said.
Senior police officials said the arrest of the militants point to the fact that Guwahati has become a hub for extremist outfits of the North eastern region as well as Maoists.
Recently police had picked up six persons, including four militants of the Meghalaya-based Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) from the city and recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition.
On June 6, a senior Maoist cadre was arrested from a residential area of the city.
