IMPHAL, June 10: Troops of 33 Assam Rifles have reportedly gunned down a militant in an encounter that took place at Wangoo Parking under Kumbi Police Station in Bishnupur district, police said here today.
According to the reports given by 33 AR to the Kumbi Police Station one 9mm pistol, two rounds, three empty cartridges and one demand note of the proscribed KCP (MC) were recovered from the slain militant after the encounter that occurred yesterday night around 10:30 pm.
The body has been deposited at RIMCS mortuary. A statement given by one of the cousins of the slain militant to the police said that his name was Salam Nanao, 25, son of S Birchandra, a resident of Laingoubi Chingjin under Kumbi Police Station.
He also told the police that Nanao was working with an outside company. The body is yet to be conducted autopsy, police sources informed.
Meanwhile, Salam Roma, sister-in-law of Nanao said that he was innocent and that she had never known Nanao to have link with any underground organization in the past one decade of her marriage to his elder brother.
Nanao was working with North East India Security Services for about one year and later he took up the business of selling clothes from door to door for about two months, Roma told reporters at the Manipur Press Club here today.
He had left home for his sister’s residence at Kumbi Terakhong Akasoi in the district around 2:30 pm yesterday telling the family he would collect some money and footballs from there, his sister-in-law said.
She said the family thought he might have stayed back at his sister’s residence. However, we found his body at RIMS mortuary this morning after the Kumbi Police Station informed us around 6 am.
Meanwhile, Kumbi constituency MLA Salam Bira met with the family of Nanao and local meira paibis and discussed about the incident.
Sources said a JAC is likely to form in connection with the killing of Nanao and submit a memorandum to the state Chief Minister tomorrow.
