Inquiry on Nanaoba killing

IMPHAL, June 15: The Kumbi MLA S Bira has assured that a judicial inquiry will be instituted into the killing of Salam Nanaoba.

Nanaoba was reportedly shot dead by troops of 33 Assam Rifles in an encounter on June 9 at Wangoo bus parking in Imphal West. The AR had also claimed that Nanaoba was a member of the banned militant organization KCP (MC).

S Bira has assured the JAC that its three demands, including judicial inquiry on the death would be met, Md Azad Khan convenor of the JAC told IFP.

He said Chief Minister O Ibobi has given a firm assurance to the concerned MLA that a judicial inquiry would be conducted on the killing. Ex-gratia would also be given to next of kin of Nanaoba, the Chief Minister further assured.

In the meantime, the Chief Minister also promised to extend financial support to the family from his discretionary fund before official process is taken up for judicial inquiry and payment of ex-gratia.

The JAC had threatened the government to take up further agitation in case the demands were not fulfilled within June 15.
