Locals refute AR claim

IMPHAL, June 11: Locals of Kumbi Laingoubi Chingjin today formed a JAC decrying the claim of the 33 Assam Rifles that Salam Nanaobi was killed in an encounter at Wangoo parking under Kumbi Police on June 9.

The JAC further decided not to accept the dead body until its demands are fulfilled by the government. The JAC has also claimed that the victim Nanaobi was not related in any way with militant outfits and claimed that the 33 AR had fabricated the encounter theory.

Convenor Md Azad told IFP that a public meeting against the AR claim was held at the Kumbi Laingoubi Community hall this morning in the presence of Boroyangbi Gram Panchayat Pradhan Md Nurul Islam

During the meeting the local populace unanimously decided upon the formation of a JAC against the killing of Salam Nanaobi.

The meeting further decided to hand over a memorandum to the state Chief Minister.

It was also resolved to demand appropriate action against the involved personnel of the 33 AR and to institute a judicial inquiry into the case and provision of ex-gratia payment to the family.

The convenor further lamented that the JAC was unable to submit their memorandum to the Chief Minister.

JAC members however met the local Kumbi MLA S Bira who assured that the memorandum will be submitted to the Chief Minister tomorrow morning.

Mentioned may be made that troops of 33 Assam Rifles had reportedly gunned down Salam Nanaobi, 25 son of S Birchandra, a resident of Laingoubi  Chingjin under Kumbi Police Station  in an alleged encounter that took place at Wangoo Parking under Kumbi Police Station in Bishnupur district, police said on June 9.

According to the reports given by 33 AR to the Kumbi Police Station one 9mm pistol, two rounds, three empty cartridges and one demand note of the proscribed KCP (MC) were recovered from the slain militant after the encounter that occurred around 10:30 pm of June 9.

A statement given by one of the cousins of the slain militant to the police said that his name was Salam Nanao, 25, son of S Birchandra, a resident of Laingoubi  Chingjin under Kumbi Police Station.

He also told the police that Nanao was working with an outside company.
