IMPHAL, June 27: Residents near the major rivers in the state are now continue to panic over a possible flood as the water level of the rivers are gradually increasing in the last five days with two rivers flowing over danger level.
However, the state IFCD Minister Ngamthang Haokip has assured that all the possible preventive measures have been taken up to avert any unwanted situation.
Water levels on Imphal River , Iril River , Nambul River , Thoubal River , Manipur River and Nambol River have risen in the last five days as heavy torrential rains hit the state. Most the rivers flowed over warning level till late morning today.
Officials of IFCD are now monitoring the level of waters in the five major rivers for every one hour, official sources informed. The monitoring of the water level is being taken up at Minuthong and Lilong Bridge for Imphal River , Irilbung Bridge for Iril River , Thong Nambobi for Nambul River , Thoubal Bridge for Thoubal River , Ithai Barrage for Manipur River , Nambol Bridge for Nambol River .
In the meantime, one control room each for IFCD office at Khoyathong, Imphal and Thoubal Athokpam has been set up.
As per record maintained at Raj Bhavan in Imphal, rainfall was registered at 40 mm while the rainfall recorded at Lamphel reached 43 mm. But Kangpokpi in Senapati district recorded the highest rainfall with 73 mm followed by 54 mm at Saikul.
Meanwhile, Gate No-I and II at Ithai Barrage has been opened to ensure free flow of water from the rivers. Pumping of water from Samushang area is now continuing after closing the Regulator Gates there.
IFCD Minister along with Chief Engineer of the department also inspected all the areas where embankments of rivers have been caved in and water seeping through the damaged areas.
Ngamthang also visited Sanjenthong, KR Lane , Keishampat, Sagolband Moirang Leirak Machin and embankment of Minuthong. Vulnerable areas were built up with bamboo rugs and earth filled in sacks.
Water overflowing from the Imphal River flooded Kekrupat and two portions of brick walls were knocked down by the force of the flooded water. The water inundated Zomi Villa and Khoyathong areas.
However, embankments of the river were fixed by putting more earth by using JCBs and later controlled the overflow of water. Water was also seeped through near the campis of Imphal West deputy Commissioner. Embankment at Old Thumbuthong was also caved in overflowing of water could be seen in the area.
Meanwhile, embankment at the Iril River section of Thongju Koirou Chingkhei has been caved in and water started to flow into the area. But the residents with the help of local MLA Th Bishworjit are now securing the portion, according to a late report.
