SoO signatory condemns arrest

IMPHAL, June 22: A signatory of Suspension of Operations (SoO) the United People Front, UPF today expressed concern and disapproval of the act of Mizoram Police in arresting the UPF vice chairperson, Lalroupuia and his deputy Viek on June 10 around 8 am at a press conference at Camp Ebenezer, a designated camp of the militant outfit, KNF at Kangpokpi.

Speaking at the press conference, UPF spokesperson Jacob Thadou said the UPF is a signatory of the Suspension of Operation with both the Manipur government and the Central government and as such the act of the Mizoram police should be condemned. 

Demanding unconditional release of the two militant leaders at the earliest, the spokesperson said that all must respect the fact that the UPF is a SoO signatory.

He continued that several of the outfit’s leaders are unable to even come out of their camps fearing wrongful detention or arrest.

He elaborated that Joint Monitoring Group convener L Sangamar who is presently at Camp Angkhusuo of the HPC (D) along the Mizoram-Jiribam border is also unable to come out of the camp.

He further questioned the need of signing of the SoO if the outfit’s leaders are supposed to be arrested.

The militant spokesperson also said that the Manipur Development Society have constructed several designated camps of several Kuki UGs including chowkidar quarters, water tanks, installation of solar lamps at Kuki UG designated camps.

He said the agency is constructing two more designated camps at present and will undertake construction of three more in the near future.
