Striking lawyers meet Law Minister

IMPHAL, June 16: The cease work strike launched by the High Court Bar Association, Manipur (HCBAM) entered its sixth day on Saturday, with the representatives of the striking association met the state Law Minister pushing their demand.

HCBAM has been on strike demanding to appoint state judges for the proposed separate High Court of the state since June 10 last. Senior advocate RK Nokulsana, chairman, M Roshini Piba convenor and Khaidem Mani, member of the Sub-committee, which was formed yesterday during a joint extended meeting of HCBAM, met with Law Minister Th Devendra at his office chamber here.

During the meeting, the representatives of HCBAM apprised the minister of the circumstances leading to the ongoing stir and also the expected negative outcome in the face of the government’s failure to appoint the state judges for the proposed separate High Court of Manipur, sources in HCBAM said.

The minister was also requested to press the state government to take up necessary steps to support the strike, the sources added. Devendra assured the leaders of HCBAM that he will bring up the matter before the state Chief Minister so that the government can take up necessary steps.

Meanwhile, the Principal Bench of Gauhati High Court has reportedly denied filing of petitions to some petitioners from Manipur, according to reports. The petitioners approached the Gauhati High Court as all the advocates at Imphal Bench Guahati High Court are now under strike.

However, N Kumarjit , president HCBAM and its secretary Roshini Piba categorically stated that they have no knowledge about the petitioners who said they approached the Gauhati High Court.
