Students plan demonstration in front of Raj Bhawan

IMPHAL, June 28: The All Manipur Students’ Union will staged a sit in protest in front of the state Raj Bhavan regarding the grievances and common issues faced by the students of the North East region in order parts of the country.

Speaking to media persons today at the student body’s headquarter, AMSU president Th Suresh said that the protest is a continuation of the larger demonstration launched by the NE regional student body, North East Students’ Organization in all the states of the region on the issue.

He said, NESO had submitted several memorandums to different Prime Ministers of the country since 2001, however the simultaneous governments have failed to act on the memorandums.

The memorandums had urged the governments to set up a Special Education Commission for the North East with special emphasis on education and Human Resource Development of the region so as to protect the cultural heritage of the region.

The student body had also been demanding the government to repeal Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958; comprehensive policies to stop influx of illegal migrants and refugees into the region and preserve the indigenous population of the region; economic and infrastructure development with special emphasis on environment; employment policies for the people of the region; tackling of the Indo-Bangladesh land strip issues through different memorandums.

Several memorandums demanding resolving the inter-state boundaries issues and special constitutional status and separate time zones for the north east have also been submitted, he said.

The regional apex body of student bodies had already staged a sit in protest at Guwahati on June 7 on the issues.

In continuation of the Guwahati demonstration, different student bodies under the umbrella of the NESO will organized sit in protest on June 29 in their respective states, he said.

It may be mentioned that NESO comprises of All Assam Students’ Union, Guwahati, Khasi Students’ Union, Shillong, Garo Students’ Union, Tura, All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union, Itanagar, Naga Students’ Federation, Kohima, All Manipur Student’s Union, Imphal, Mizo Zirlai Pawl, Aizwal and Twipra Students’ Federation, Agartala.
