Tamenglong: a better place to live in

TALENGLONG, June 5: Let`s pledge to make Tamenglong a better place to live in, is the Message of this year World Environment Day (WED) 2012. To spread this message and create awareness among the public, Green marathons, Walkathon, Mass tree plantation drives, seminars, painting and Essay competitions were organized to mark the World Environment week in Tamenglong on Tuesday.

“Today, we organized Mass tree plantations in the Gadai forest range, to increase people’s awareness to save the environment, and to promote awareness on the importance of preserving our biodiversity. It also aims to identify issues related to environment and ways to take corrective action “said Dr Chambo, Organizing committee member.

The World Environment day started off in a unique way in the early hour of the morning. More than 500 people gathered in Jadonang Park to precede up to the Gadai hills for Symbolic Plantation. The crowd was lead by the Deputy Commissioner Tamenglong C Arthur W, IAS and the local MLA, Janghemlung Panmei along with Special invitees H.Dilip sports director and the local MDCs, DFO, DLOs and the Armies.

The Dignitaries planted different types of trees on the Gadai forest. The 13 Assam Rifles Officers along with their troop also participated in the Mass plantation in the Gadai forest in the morning session.

The second Session took place in the Indoor stadium at 11:00 am, more than thousand people gathered to witness the unique celebration of the World Environment Day in Tamenglong. The program started off with a prayer by Rev T.P. Mordecai followed by a song presentation by EGF youth. DFO, Huri Golmei was the resource person of the function. He urged the people of Tamenglong to plant more trees and to nurture them until they grow big. He also advises the people to teach their children and instilled in their young minds about the importance of forest in their life.

Prizes for various competitions conducted during the Environment week were distributed during the function.

The Chief Guest, Janghemlung Panmei, MLA, said that change should come from within. We should not wait only for the Govt to bring the change but all individual should take initiative to bring the changes we wanted to see in our society. He also encourages all the public of Tamenglong to make Tamenglong a green district not only in Manipur but in the whole world too.

L.P.Gonmei, Principal Sec. Power who was the Guest of honor took the example of Dailong Village as the model village for conservation of forest. ‘Every village should take the replica of Dailong village to turn our District a green District’’ said L.P.Gonmei.

H.Dilip Sharma, Director of Sports who was also the special invitee of the function was overwhelmed to see such public response. He was proud to be part of such meaningful and well organized event. He applauded the effort of the Deputy commissioner Tamenglong and his team.

The Function President, C Arthur W, IAS Congratulate all the wards chairmen and their respective wards for making the event a huge success. he also encourages the public by coining a line from the American cree Indian proverb’’ Only When the Last Tree has die, the Last river Poisoned , the Last Fish being caught, will we Realize That we Cannot Eat Money’’.

When the TMM reporter spoke to SDO/TML T.K.Simte one of the organizing committee about the inspiration behind ‘SAVE GADAI’,” The idea behind such awareness programmes is to use Environmental Day as a strong and effective platform in protecting the environment and finding solutions for a sustainable living’’ said T.K.Simte, SDO.

As a tool to spread awareness about the need to save the environment. A pledge was taken by all the attending participants in the world Environment day. Signatures and thumb prints where imprinted on the pledge banner as a sign of assurance to protect our Environment.

The vote of thanks was given by Armstrong Pame, IAS,SDO/Tousem. The program ended beautifully with Rev. Liangcham pronouncing the Benidiction.
