IMPHAL, June 2: 356 Imphal bound goods carriers including oil tankers are presently stranded along the National Highway 37 at Jiribam due to the ongoing bandh imposed by the Zeliangrong Stundents’ Union, Manipur along the said highway.
According to a police source, the trucks include essential commodity carriers and oil tankers.
The bandh has been imposed by the student body since 5pm of June 1 and will end this midnight.
Makam Post adds: Normal life in Tamenglong district of the state was totally disrupted by the strike called by the Zeliangrong Student’s Union starting from evening yesterday however; there has been no report of any untoward incidents except for a stray incident of a truck being dismantled by strikers near Reangpaeng.
In Longmai Bazaar all the commercial, and government institutions remained shut and strike volunteers forced shut the Railway Construction work at Noney and warned the workers with threats to stay away from their respective duties.
In Tamenglong head quarter the movement of vehicles was totally paralyzed except for some emergency cases.
In Tamei sub-division, commuters stayed away from plying along the road.
Finance secy of the student body, Micah informed Makam Post from Tamei that normal plying of vehicles were also severely affected, and all shops, govt. offices, NGOs remained closed.
Chairman, ZSUM, Dishuang Stephen further said if the government is not responsive in a positive way, ZSUM will further take up a series of agitations starting from this month.
Another leader of the student body said more serious agitations will be initiated if the authorities fail to response and take up the matter.
