Commando post set up at Moreh

IMPHAL, July 27: Following negotiations between top police officials led by ADGP LM Khaute and Kuki organizations, a police commando unit moved in to the border town of Moreh today evening. Meanwhile, the state Home Minister Gaikhangam has assured that the police commandoshave been properly briefed on human rights.

It may be recalled here that, a police commando unit led by Inspector Potsangbam Sanjoy Singh was stopped by Kuki civilians yesterday from entering Moreh at New Mongjang.

An amicable solution was brought today after a meeting at HTC, Moreh between top police officials including ADGP LM Khaute, Chandel SP E Priyokumar and newly posted SDPO Moreh H Balaram.

According to reports, LM Khoute impressed upon the Kuki leaders that the deputing of police commandos is a direct order of the state government and it has to be complied with.

The Kuki organizations voiced their concerns about the unsavoury reputation of the police commandos and said as there are already enough security personnel inclusive of the Assam Rifles, Manipur Rifles, Police and VDF stationed at Moreh there is no need for the commandos.

The police officials had clarified that the commandos are to be deputed on an experimental basis as they have more experience in countering anti social elements than the paramilitary forces. The commandos will be stationed for an operational tenure of 3 months.

Following the deliberations, the police commando team led by Inspector Potsangbam Sanjoy which were halted at Tengnoupal since yesterday arrived at Moreh town by 5 pm today.

They will be stationed at Police Guest House which will also serve as the Commando outpost. 2 teams each from Imphal West, East and Thoubal are deployed at the outpost.

Home minister Gaikhangam has also mentioned in the regard that the commandos are deployed according to the situation. At the sidelines of a function, he said that since police commandos are stationed at Jiribam and they also have to be kept at Moreh also.

Their deployment is a normal exercise and they have complete jurisdiction to check the law and order situation in any area of the State.

He later appealed the Kuki organizations that the working of the police commandos will be closely monitored and no human right violation or excesses will take place.
