Guwahati: DoNER Minister Addresses at the Inaugural of Teaching Programmes at TISS

The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Paban Singh Ghatowar has said that Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a renowned institute in the inter-disciplinary areas of Social Sciences in the country. The Minister said this during the inaugural function of the Teaching Programmes in TISS Campus in Guwahati on July 21, 2012. He said that vital contribution of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in creating human resources for building just and peaceful societies across the North-Eastern States.

The Minister informed that TISS Governing Board has agreed to a Government of India s’ proposal to reserve 66% of the seats for students from the North Eastern States.

These 66% seats have been evenly distributed among the eight States with a minimum of eight seats per every 100 seats to a State with smallest population.

Moreover, being part of a centrally funded university, TISS Guwahati campus will follow all Government of India norms.

Moreover, all students from Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Castes get free education (tuition, hostel and dining charges paid by the institute) and all OBC (non-creamy layer) students also get tuition fee waiver, the Minister added.

Shri Ghatowar said that his Ministry’s project

“setting up of Guwahati Campus of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Assam”

has been retained by NLCPR Committee of Ministry of DoNER recently, with the condition that DoNER Ministry will provide funds for infrastructure cost (only building portion) for the project, which works out as approx. Rs. 52 crores.

He assured that his Ministry will continue to provide all possible support to make the TISS’s North Eastern Region campus as a world class educational institution to serve the needs of North Eastern States.

The Chief Minister of Assam Shri Tarun Gogoi was also present on the occasion.
