Monsoon floods: Toll rises to 95, Assam – rescue and relief ops on

Talking to newsmen in Guwahati on Tuesday Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that he discussed with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on this issue on Monday after conducting an aerial survey of the flood affected districts. The state has lost around 4 lakh 50 thousand hectare land so far due to erosion. Mr Gogoi also asked the Centre to take steps for the installation of an early warning system for flood in the region.

In Assam, rescue and relief operations are in full swing in the flood affected areas. Death toll following landslide and flood has mounted to 95 people. Official reports said that 12 lakh 33 thousand people took shelter in 551 relief camps in the state.

The erosion in the river Brahmaputra also posed a serious threat to the State.
